Pewter chalice with patterned surface and engraved “PX” ciborium. Used during Eucharistic celebrations. While liturgical law stipulates that chalices be made of gold or silver, an exception is made during times of persecution or emergency (war etc.), or in circumstances of extreme poverty and a ‘calix stanneus’ (pewter chalice) is permitted. However, the inside of the chalice must still be gilded.
