Dual-function gold chalice and ciborium. The chalice occupies first place among the sacred vessels used for the celebration of the Mass. Such is its importance that the existing law dictates that the chalice be made out of precious metal (only gold or silver ought to be used). Any other substance is not considered worthy of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. If made from a metal less precious than gold, the inside should be gilded. Similarly, the ciborium, used to hold the hosts for and after the Eucharist, should also be made of similar metals that do not easily break or deteriorate.
