The Catholic Foundation was established by Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Chia on 27th December 2012 as the philanthropic arm of the Archdiocese of Singapore.
Its mission is “To promote philanthropic giving and provide financial stewardship for the funds raised to support the capacity building needs of the Catholic Church in Singapore.” By this, the Catholic Foundation aims to help the development of organisational, infrastructural, process and human development needs of the various organisations that make up the church.
In May 2014, after Archbishop William Goh shared his 10-year pastoral plan, the Foundation further honed its focus to support His Grace’s vision of establishing a missionary and evangelical Church.
To date, the Foundation has disbursed more than S$1.5 million in grants, aimed at establishing new institutions to take the Church forward in line with His Grace’s ten-year pastoral plan, strengthening the infrastructure of existing Archdiocesan organisations and bodies forming and training clergy, religious, staff and parishioners, developing and sharing of best practices across archdiocesan organisations and parishes and ensuring adequate and qualified staffing at the various archdiocesan organisations, catholic schools and parishes.
Some of the organisations which have benefitted from these grants are the Archdiocesan Commission for Catholic Schools (ACCS), Archdiocesan Commission for the Family (ACF), Catholic Theological Institute of Singapore (CTIS), Office for the New Evangelisation (ONE), Office for Young People (OYP) and SACCRE Youth.
The Catholic Foundation continues to grow under the leadership and guidance of the Archbishop and the Foundation’s nine board members. The Board and its two staff are working towards encouraging greater philanthropy and a stronger sense of giving within the church of Singapore. The Foundation has received pledges of more than S$10 million but much more is needed for the sustained growth and continued development of the church.
